The Learig
(Words & music © Pete MacGregor)

Another year, another town
You work awhile and then you go
The room's too cold to spend the night
I know a place that's warm for now.

You'll find me in the Learig
A glass, a Grouse, a half o' beer.
There's aye a face behind the bar
To help forget what brought me here.

You kids are grown, it's ten years now
You never saw me in the gaol.
I hope you mind a younger me
And tell your pals some likely tale.

The lasses smiles are often warm
But eyes are cold in light o' day
A few pounds spent an' come the morn
You're on your own back down the way.

When I see the younger ones
I know I've joined the older crew
The poets, singers, sinners, saints;
We've seen it all, we need a few.

The drink's done stronger men than me;
Some day soon I'll set things right
I'll easy 'scape the bottle's claw,
Get back old friends, but for tonight...

Walk up the road, beside the loch,
Watching the boats in day's last light
Keep on the road or back to town?
Some day I'll go but for tonight...
