Good Times, Bad Times
(words & music © Pete MacGregor)
I remember the times I was on the road
Those times may come again
You think you've made the break but they'll reel you in
Like a fish in the cold dark stream.
Good times, bad times, best times worst times
Will they get better or no'
You can't take it with you; leave it behind;
Up on the road and go.
I remember the school, won't go back there
Those times won't come again
I can read, I can count; that'll get me by.
I can talk to the women and men.
I remember my horses, Duke and Sam
Their time won't come again.
I got away from the kicks and the cold and the mud
But I think on them now and then
I sat behind the team and we cut the corn.
Those times won't come again
I kept the cutter straight and I watched the rabbits run
Across the field from the guns and the men.
I remember my first lass, Wee Janette,
Many others have passed me by.
We'd walk in the woods up above Kinneil
I can still see the glint in her eye.
So I'll listen to the telling o' the old folks' tales
O' the times o' long ago.
I'll learn all the songs; remember the tunes,
Carry them as I go.
I remember the times I was on the road
Those times may come again
You think you've made the break but they'll reel you in
Like a fish in the cold dark stream.
