Greedy Town
(Words © Pete MacGregor, Tune Trad arr. Pete MacGregor)
I left my friends, the fields and fells
There's nothing here, the mill's going down.
The old man said "You'd best be gone,
Go find your way to Greedy Town."!
First when I came to Greedy Town,
The rush, the smell, the dirt, the sound;
But all was new and I was young,
I fell in love with Greedy Town.
Soon I learned to push and shout
To buy and sell , quick turn around
Be bull, stag, bear and shear the sheep
I got ahead in Greedy Town.
So roll the dice and spin the wheel
Deal out the stocks, shares, gilts and bonds.
Why be a slave when you can play
The gambler's game in Greedy Town?
But bubbles burst and circles turn
The paper and the cash all gone.
I'll tell my tale for all to learn
I lost it all in greedy Town.
The young ones say I'm o'er the hill.
Come Lady Luck don't let me down.
I'll not go back to silent mill
I'll come again to Greedy Town.
