I'll Live To Sing
(Words & music © Pete MacGregor)

When I was young and to the school
I quickly learned, at work or play,
If I could laugh and crack a joke
I'd live to sing another day.

I wasn't great at the sport or games.
"Too slow, too small, he's in the way"
But with the girls I'd sometimes score
And live to sing another day.

They sent me off to fight the wars;
To face the foe in frightenin' fray
Let medals go to other folk
I'll live to sing another day.

I married then - a lovely lass,
But, as they will, she'd have her way
I'd say "Yes", "No" and "As you like"
And live to sing another day

Now if my glance should chance to stray
And catch another's wandering eye;
I'd have more sense than say a word.
I'd live to sing another day.

My children now, they tell me plain
I've nothing learned along life's ways,
But they let me be to quietly sit
And sing my songs of other days.

Now when I'm dead, put on my stone,
"Stranger travelling on your way
Take my song; pass it on.
I'll live to sing another day."
